Natural Regional Park of the Vulture, 3 july

Medieval Trekking

The walk starts from Località San Vito in the southern part of the Grotticelle Oriented Reserve. We go into the woods along a slightly  uphillp path towards the ruins of the Longobard castle. This is the castle of Monticchio. In the past it was a fortified area aimed to control the ancient roads. Here we enjoy a wonderful landscape on the Ofanto’s Valley. This territory contains one of the wonders of the Vulture: the Bramea Europea, a prehistoric jewel who came from Miocenic. We continue in the direction of the Lakes of Monticchio crossing the village of Monticchio. Sgarroni and its enchanting cultivated countryside. We arrive on the isthmus that connects the Lago Piccolo with the Lago Grande where there is the Archaeological Park of Sant’Ippolito, an important medieval abbey. Ending point is the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, seat of the Museum of Natural History of Vulture.
